The pros and cons of Capitalism and Colonialism

Subject Area(s) to Focus On:

The Industrial Revolution has ushered in both progress, and the oppression which the profit motive can encourage.

Worker exploitation in Europe eventually led to the somewhat successful movement for improved working conditions for those who perished under child labor, low wages, and the draconian treatment that contributed to the ill health and disintegration of the family unit of the working classes.

This is not to ignore the more progressive elements of Adam Smith's capitalism. Private enterprise has also led to innovative businesses, the triumph of the creative entrepreneur (think Bill Gates), and the constant push for technological innovation that has made our modern global age possible.

But our unit on the Truimph of Capitalism and Imperialism will also focus on the darker side of free enterprise: yet another era of the ultimate exploitation of human beings-- the forceful occupation of foreign lands, and, in the case of Africa and the Americas, the enslavement of human beings.

Has imperialism also contributed to the progress of the colonies? There are also historians who argue its effects have not been wholly oppressive.

This blog will address explore these perspectives.Throughout the course of this unit, you will be assigned activities which require your active participation as bloggers. I look forward to your contributions. Enjoy.
